Defining Purpose

Categories: Discovering Purpose

Life is a journey, full of great challenges with extremely remarkable successes and for some total unforgettable failures.  I have learnt from both extremes to understand and appreciate the purpose of God for my life.

God really has a purpose for everyone and everything in existence on the surface of the earth.  The Bible admonishes in Romans 8 :28 that “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”  The God that we serve is a God of purpose.  The dictionary defines the word ‘purpose’ simply as the reason for which something exists or is done, made, or used.  It could also mean an intended or desired result, end, aim or goal.  In 3 John 2, it is stated that ‘Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”  God’s intended purpose for us, is for his children to prosper materially, physically and also spiritually.

It is a common saying that when the purpose of a thing is unknown, then abuse of it is inevitable.  Discovering your purpose and passionately pursuing it is what leads to a fulfilment of life.  Passion is what really brings purpose to manifestation.  Passion is an inner drive.  Passion sets your priority and gives direction to your life.  Your passion in anything you believe in will definitely show without you announcing it.  Your passion will guide, guard and protect the call of God upon your life.  If we take a succinct look again at Romans 8:28, we see the word ‘called’ in the last part of the verse “…to them who are the called according to his purpose.”  The Bible also says many are called but few are chosen (Matthew 22:14).  If you don’t understand the purpose for which you are called by somebody, you can hardly take on a next line of action.  You’ve got to understand why you are called.  That is why when someone calls you, you are obliged to wait patiently for the information or instruction.  Jesus Christ knew the reason for His calling.

In Isaiah 61:1, it is clearly stated “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners.”  That was also the reason why He told His earthly parents at a stage not to bother about Him that they should know that He should be going about doing the Father’s (God’s) business (Luke 2:49). This was also the single reason why He responded to His disciples when they wanted Him to eat physical meat or food.  Hear Him in John 4:34 that, He said “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.”

It is my prayer that you will seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33).
